“The search for personal freedom entails decisions that the individual must undertake against obstacles in any society, anywhere in the World; if they take place in impoverished regions with rigid social structures, then these actions may become great achievements. The Caribbean, synonym of natural beauty and latent sensuality, contradicts this notion with its sharp differences, based on the racial origin and the economic status of its inhabitants, and fortified by an immovable patriarchal order.
Paradoxically, the vibrant stories of Los Fantabulosos Vuelos emerge from this medium, adverse to analysis, hostile to the exploration and definition of one’s identity, particularly of female identity. Its authors revolt against the scarcity of resources of the archipelago and their works exceed the limiting conditions through a wide variety of styles and arguments. They incisively portray the prevailing moral misery, delving into the complexities and subtleties of emotional relationships; they shout and claim in protest at unfair, humiliating situations; they confront and move us with their sublime sacrifices, unto the ultimate consequences, sustained by their aspiration to achieve their desired and deserved freedom.»
