Description
The Daughters of Charity of Saint Vincent de Paul have provided aid to adults and children under social risk and extreme poverty in the Isthmus of Panama since 1875. Paradoxically, their contribution to public health is unknown. These Catholic Sisters tended to patients in hospitals in the capital and the city of Colón in the late 19 th and early 20 th centuries, and fought together with medical personnel, against a syphilis epidemic, the third serious infectious disease that decimated the population during the construction of the interoceanic route, after the ravages caused by yellow fever and malaria. This work analyzes the events that occurred, reproducing unpublished documents of the time, including photographs by Carlos Endara, who portrayed the charisms of the Daughters of Charity with mastery and skill.
Sales of this book will benefit the Sisters’ projects: Hogar San José de Malambo, Hogar Bolívar, Hogar Monerri, Hogar Santa Luisa de Marillac (Puerto Pilón, Colón), Hogar Medalla Milagrosa and Escuela Medalla Milagrosa (Ciudad de David, Chiriquí).
