Ángela Hernández Núñez

Ángela Hernández Núñez was born in Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic, in 1954. She studied chemical engineering, although she has mainly dedicated herself to research and activism concerning human and civil rights, with an emphasis on the social status of women. She has published numerous volumes of poetry and essays. Her first short-story collection, Alótropos (1989), was enthusiastically received by critics; one of the stories in the collection, “Cómo recoger la sombra de las flores” was awarded the Casa del Teatro Prize in Santo Domingo. Since then she has published the short-story collections Masticar una rosa (1993), Piedra de Sacrificio (2000) and La secta del crisantemo (2012); the last two won the Premio Anual de Cuento. In 2001, she published her first novel, Mudanza de los sentidos, a Caribbean Bildungsroman about a young girl’s experiences under the regime of dictator Trujillo. This was followed by Charamicos (2004) and Métafora del cuerpo en fuga (2006). Her photographs have been shown in the Dominican Republic and in Italy; she published the book Oniria, composed of poetry and images, in 2012. Ángela Hernández Núñez received the Premio Nacional de Literatura in 2016 in her country of birth, in recognition of her complete oeuvre.
