Ana Lydia Vega

Ana Lydia Vega was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, in 1946. She has published four short-story collections: Vírgenes y mártires (1981) with Carmen Lugo Filippi, Encancaranublado y otros cuentos de naufragio (1983), winner of the Casa de las Américas Prize, Pasión de historia y otras historias de pasión (1987), winner of the Premio Internacional Juan Rulfo and Falsas crónicas del sur (1991). In 1988, she published an essay collection, El tramo ancla, which gathers the essays published by Vega and her colleagues in “Relevo”, a column in the Puerto Rican leftist newspaper Claridad. Esperando a Loló y otros delirios generacionales (1996) gathers her satirical essays about Puerto Rican society and politics. In 1988, she published two children’s books, Celita y el mangle zapatero and En la bahía de Jobos, with an ecological theme: the conservation of mangroves in Borinquen. Her narrative is characterized by her innovative use of language and by her concern for women’s rights, for her denouncement of exploitation and oppression. Vega was a professor of French in the University of Puerto Rico, and is a regular contributor to the island’s journals and newspapers. She is the author of the script for the film La gran fiesta (1985).
