Hyvrard was born in Paris in 1945 and began writing in Martinique, during the years that she lived in the island working as a professor of Economics. She is a prolific author who has written novels, poetry and short-stories set on an island that could well be Guadeloupe or Martinique. Her narrative is characterized by its sizzling criticism of Western patriarchal society. The extended metaphor of the black woman as a victim of violence and abuse, and the author’s fragmented prose examine the silence imposed on black women and black men by the colonial male discourse. Among her numerous novels we select Les prunes de Cythère (1975), La meurtritude (1977), Le corps défunt de la comédie (1982), La jeune morte en robe de dentelle (1990), Ton nom de vegetal (1999), On attend Robert (2012) and La cérémonie (2014). Jeanne Hyvrard resides in the French capital.
