Bangkok, Wat Mahanat monastery. Ananda, a Buddhist monk and former police officer, is commissioned to conduct an investigation parallel to that carried out officially by the Thai police. A homeless teenager, whom the urban monastery has given shelter to, shows up murdered with distinctive retaliation traits, befitting of drug trafficking rings.
The brutal crime contraposes Buddhist precepts –of self-control, concerning the perception of death as transit to other lives- causing sufferings, raising constant questions in the unorthodox detective, in relation to his religious faith and in his faith in the human race. His response to the violent termination of life and the monks’ ease with the ceremony of cremation, so far removed from Western morbidity, provide strong criticism of our sensationalist society.
Nearby neighbors of the monastery, as well as other monks and former colleagues of Ananda in his previous occupation, will help him solve the case.
